This is a well crafted story of loving and losing, and how learning how to build lasting relationships takes a lifetime to master. Wendy's writing style and characters make this a pleasant journey despite the tragedies that the main characters experience. Anyone who has had a special friend or who never forgets that time in their life when you were mesmorized by a song or a band will identify with the themes in this book. Be prepared to be humming an Abba tune or two en route!
After picking up "Looking for Anita", I just couldn't put it down. I even found myself simultaneously reading rapidly because I was so anxious to read what happens next yet trying to slow myself down to savor every sentence. Of course, my nostalgia of Spain grew with each descriptive passage....and I thought of my past romances as I tenuously read about the developing relationship with Fernando.
The story was so well crafted as you wove memories and doses of culture into this poignant novel. I particularly liked the way the author sectioned off each chapter, but then gave the reader a clue as to what may happen in the next.
Similar to my enjoyment of "Eat, Pray, Love", I absolutely adored reading it, and can't wait to get my hands on the author's next book.
Looking for Anita is a wonderfully human story, with all its tragedies, interconnections and joys that define our everyday lives. Wendy Ramer tells a very relatable story with a polished simplicity....meaning, the story doesn't go too deep so that you are wondering what you just read, but you do find yourself connecting to the heroine in a deeply personal way, undermining your own personal stories from childhood and young adulthood that both feed and starve you into middle age. Loved it and appreciated it very much.
Wendy Ramer is a compelling storyteller. I've read both her books and thoroughly enjoyed them. They are hard to put down and got me hooked from page one.
Looking for Anita filled me with nostalgia for my childhood friends. The book made me think about the special bond of "old" friendships versus more new adult friendships. Whether you still have a relationship with a childhood friend or you lost that friendship and wonder what happened to your old friend, you will enjoy this book!
