Spurrier provides one of the most surprisingly strong work of the entire Secret Wars lineup with this book that takes place in the Deadlands where the Marvel Zombies roam. Elsa Bloodstone (a classic Marvel D-Lister) serves atop the Shield Wall fighting the daily attacks from zombies, Ultron robots, and Annihilation Wave bugs. When a zombie attack leaves her stranded on the wrong side of the Wall, Elsa must survive among the shambling hordes until she can find her way to safety or rescue. Her mission becomes more challenging when she discovers a mysterious lost child who is also stranded beyond the Wall. Perectly capturing the vibe the Secret Wars' Shield is essentially the Wall from Game of Thrones, this book is surprisingly one of the most emotionally resonant of all the tie-ins. Marvel Zombies has never been one of my favorite books, but they are used perfectly here as a backdrop for Elsa's struggle for survival and for her deep seated issues with her monster hunting father to bubble to the surface. An ice queen through and through, Elsa realizes as she comes to care for her mysterious ward that her entire life has been impacted by her father's brutality and abusive behavior. The fact that Spurrier draws such a fantastic character piece out of a Marvel Zombies tie-in is simply remarkable. The collection also includes a reprinting of the first issue of the original Marvel Zombies story for good measure.

Marvel Zombies Robert Kirkman Sean Phillips 9780785122777 Books Reviews

What a stupid concept, right? Spiderman, Colonel America, The Hulk, The X-men and all the rest of the Marvel Super-heroes turn into zombies. Dumb, no?

NO!

Marvel Zombies was one of the more pleasant surprises that I've come across in long long while.

Robert Kirkman, Creator of The Walking Dead series (The Walking Dead Book 1,The Walking Dead, Book 2,The Walking Dead Book 3,The Walking Dead, Vol. 7 The Calm Before &The Walking Dead Volume 8 Made To Suffer), knows how to do a zombie story. And he does Marvel Zombies just as well as he does the aforementioned Walking Dead series.

Marvel Zombies is an exceptionally well-done tale of what would happen in the universe where some of our favorite super-heroes are affected by a zombie infection and go to war with the living. What happens? Well, our super-heroes win, of course...but us normal folk don't see it as a win, that's for sure. We're talking taking super-heroes and turning them into super-zombies. Do the math....It's Doomsday, people.

This story is extremely well-written, and there's no need to have ever read or seen a single comic book to appreciate Marvel Zombies. And this release couldn't be more timely with the blockbuster movie releases of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer coming out almost simultaneously. A couple of the characters in those movies have big roles in Marvel Zombies.

Do you like zombie flicks? Do you enjoy the Marvel super-hero stories? Yes? Then Marvel Zombies is a terrific, enjoyable, quick read that you'd be remiss to deprive yourself of.

Check it out. (And then don't miss the prequel Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness where some real "Ash" kickin' gets done!)
Marvel Zombies 3 collects the four-issue series and a cover gallery in one TPB and begins a new arc to the zombie storyline! A zombified Deadpool makes his way into the normal Marvel universe (Earth 616) and wreaks havoc and infects the members of the Fifty-State Initiative (Siege, Conquistador, Jennifer Kale, and Wundarr) before being chopped to bits by an airboat fan. The super secret organization A.R.M.O.R. (Altered-Reality Monitoring and Operational Response) hire Jocasta and Machine Man to get human DNA from the zombie-verse and give it to Morbius so he can create a cure for Earth 616. Once through an inter-dimensional portal, they find life-form readings and discover Kingpin is cloning humans for the zombies to feast upon. Machine Man sends Jocasta back (with a DNA sample from Vanessa Fisk) and fights off the zombies in the zombie-verse all while, in Earth 616, a horrendous zombie plague is on the horizon and it's up to Morbius to stop it; and himself before it's too late!

This third volume takes a break from the normal zombie team of Giant-Man and the lot (although they're mentioned in flashbacks) and follows the robotic team of Jocasta and Machine Man in an inter-dimensional adventure. The cover gallery included features the four covers that parody various zombie movie posters which is a fantastic idea and inclusion! This story arc is extremely gory (much more so than the others) and a fantastic read. The story gets kind of confusing with all the dimension-hopping that is done but there's a great twist in it and the ending leads right up to part four and the formation of the Midnight Sons! Overall, it was cool seeing Morbius and Machine Man and the introduction of A.R.M.O.R. And the little bit of Deadpool that was shown was written very well and hilarious. I highly recommend it to any Marvel fans!
The first trade of "Marvel Zombies" covers the initial run of the comics line. The basic premise is that there is an alternate reality where something happened to turn almost all of the heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe into self-aware zombies. When we start the story, they have already been zombies for some time, and most of the living have already been eaten. The bulk of the story covers a small group of former heroes as they search for more food in what's become an exhausted and devoured world. Dark humor is the name of the game here, and there is plenty of gory artwork to compliment it.

Some might take issue with the fact that the heroes seem to have turned to complete self-serving jerks as zombies, concerned solely with getting their next meal no matter what. I must admit it is a little off-putting to see them all turn effectively evil so easily, but as an alternate reality "What-If" tale, I can live with it and get into it. It's a fun (if twisted) little ride.
