But the witness to an unsolved murder is never safe as long as the killer is loose and Professor Helen Haggerty wants Archer to protect her.

When a second murder occurs, Archer starts wondering. Are these murders connected in some way? The police think so, although they can't decide whether to blame the ex-con father or the mentally fragile daughter. Police want to close cases and both father and daughter are easy targets. But are they guilty? Thomas McGee claims that he was railroaded for the murder of his wife. His hysterical daughter Dolly wants to take the blame for both murders.

There's the usual cast of characters you find in all of Macdonald's mysteries. Some are broken people (pathetic and sometimes dangerous) who exist on the edges of society. And some seem like highly respectable citizens until Archer's investigation threatens to expose their secrets. Then the savagery of even the highly civilized comes to the surface with shocking results.

The author skillfully explores the controversial subject of using a child's testimony in court cases, especially where the child is required to testify against a loved one. Can a child's account of a traumatic event be accurate? And what is the cost to the child's psyche?

Macdonald's books stand out for the complexity of his plots and the shrewd knowledge of human nature shown in his characters. His books expose the quicksand beneath the golden surface of life in post-WWII California. It's a sun-drenched paradise, but few of the inhabitants are living dream lives. Many came West hoping to out-run their problems, but their problems always catch up with them. If you haven't discovered this fine author, you're missing something.

I've been wondering what to read for a detective story after exhausting the Philip Marlowe series by Raymond Chandler and this guy looks to be a close second to the Marlowe type. However, I thought there could have been some humor added. A little too serious with the story line. Aside from that, the plot was good. Nonetheless, I'm pressing on with Blue City. Let's see what happens.
Ross MacDonald as always writes another compelling page-turner featuring detective Lew Archer. Michael Connelly says Ross MacDonald is the best detective series writer but Ross idolized Raymond Chandler. You can't go wrong reading novels by any of the three. Comparing Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald is like trying to compare different types of apples it comes down to personal taste.

If you have not read Ross MacDonald then start now. If you have then you know this is Lew Archer and another complex murder mystery which leaves deep psychological scars besides dead victims. As always, a treat to read to read or listen to on CD.
This book is a classic. Unfortunately, I bought the version. Whoever edited the book as a did a terrible job. There are several misspelled words. In addition, there are poems quoted that do not line up appropriately. The poems go on for pages with one letter per line so it becomes unreadable. I bought the because the paperback print is very small. The version is not up to par with the original classic book. At $9.99 for the version, I would expect something much better than what was produced.
Plucked this from his biography Kenneth Millar, under the pen name of Ross Macdonald, arguably forms the third point of what is now considered the Holy Trinity of hardboiled detective fiction, the other points being, of course, Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, and is, to many, the most critically and academically respected of the three. There is no way I could have matched the comparison. He was a brilliant writer and has left a challenging legacy for future mystery writers. Thus far I've read The Moving Target, The Chill, and I'm currently reading the Drowning Pool. One could say The Chill is chilling. Great surprise ending and he never gives it away. My goal is to read all his novels and short stories and then move on to Chandler.
I have read just about every book by Ross MacDonald. This book is by far superior to any of his previous books. This is one of the last books in the Lew Archer series, the last one being "The Blue Hammer." The story is superbly crafted with MacDonald's talent of turning phrases and his visual metaphors. His metaphors alone bring an extra charm to the story telling. In this novel, MacDonald teases you with details, and leads you in all different directions. I tried to solve the case before his protagonist, Lew Archer, did, and was pleasantly surprised. Ross MacDonald is the best that ever was and will be; There is no comparison.
